Whadda people say? Out of the rubble... like a phoenix... bla, bla, whatever.
I began disassembling Mudfire IV the other day. Once I got the bell taken off and the oven floor removed, one thing seemed obvious: the reactor core - where the rocket magic happens - seemed quite short. Hmmm.
Maybe before I totally disassemble Mudfire IV and move to a new location for Mudfire V, a few experiments can be done.
Road rocks to keep 'em separated. Once the mud mortar sets up, these four firebricks...
...will be removed, revealing the great grate.
Next: building the walls and top of the firebox; putting a "peter channel" into the burn tunnel. Test fire!

Two more courses applied to the reactor zone. Later on the void will be filled with perlite. The other end beckons.
I'd messed around with a variety of fireboxes last fall, concluding bigger is better and ashes get in the way. Vertical fireboxes are generally scary, eyebrow-burning chimneys waiting their chance to break free the chains of conventional rocket-stovery. Had about enough of that. I'd previously figured Mudfire V would have an elevated firebox, allowing easy access to the ash floor. Instead, the classic ash "pit" with old window sash weights to serve as the grate.
