Perlite is, well, light, and fairly dusty but it clumps together as if it were a bit damp. But it isn't. I covered the fire hole with foil during the pouring of the perlite.
I used the wooden post as a rolling pin to equalize the metal posts. Next time I'd let the mud set up for an hour or two prior to pounding the posts. They seem to have all pretty much squashed their way through the wet mud and landed on top of the almost-level ring below. Had the fresh mud been a little more resistant the posts could have become a bit more level with each other.
On the other hand, mud is the primary construction medium here so what's with this whining about accuracy and "levelness" anyhow?
